Tribute To Teachers
By John Cheong
Teachers do have an impact on students, especially in the early years, in Primary School. It was said that certain teachers impact into a student's life so much so that the student become an achiever in life whereas some retards a student's progress due to negative criticisms. There are so many teachers that I remembered throughout my life and there is not one that I hated or think badly of. I can say all of them are darn good teachers! I am not sure whether they are still alive or not but I am thankful for the effort, dedication and zeal they put into their work. Some I remembered their names but most I cannot recall except their faces that's etched into my memory forever. The one teacher that has changed me the most was a Chegu Zainal! He was my Geography teacher when I was in Form 3! Well, what happened was, I was the only one who failed Geography in the whole calss of 45 students! Encik Zainal called me out and he said, anyone who can fail in Geography should use Manila Rope to hang himself on a tall tree!!! Was I mad at him? No! but I felt so ashamed of myself and remembered the whole class laughing! What happened was, I decided to study hard and show them I can pass Geography! I did and even got a distinction for the subject! Thanks to Encik Zainal! Then there was Mr Lai Chak Wah, a most feared teacher in the whole school! He was fierce and strict and the school's disciplinarian! I liked him because he punished all the bullies in the school! All we need to do is to inform him about the bullying! Love that guy! Then there was Mr. Poh Ee Huat who taught English Literature! I used to see him play tennis in the evenings and the striking thing was, he never moved more then a step or two! Just swing his racquet at the ball and any that was out of range he just let them go!!! Wow! what a tennis player! I remembered Miss Cheong, Mrs. Richards and Mr. Muthaiah the one with an English wife who was a teacher in the same school. Then the low low voice of Mr. Ramalingam the deputy headmaster. Mr. Chye Kooi Loong was one of my favorites! He was very involved in after school activities! He took us climbing the local hills, camping beside water-falls, hot-springs in Tapah, cycled 70 miles around the State of Perak! He was fun and we all loved him! By the way he was my Geography teacher too but by then I excelled in the subject and he nominated me to be the Chairman of the Geographical Society! Then there was this fat guy by the name of Mr. Ng Tong Lim! He kept an English Bull-terrier, the only one in my hometown then. They both looked alike! Hehe! That was my first exposure to Bull Terriers and I became a fan of this lovely dog the rest of my life! I was impressed by that stupid down face that gave it a unique look! As for school Headmasters, I remembered their faces and names but they had very little impact on us since they never really taught us in any subjects. The only time a student had the chance of meeting the Headmaster was either it was a disciplinarian issue or you failed in class! However in my school, for serious offenses like fighting, stealing, we get public caning in front of the whole school! Personally I think the Primary School Teachers had the most impact on us. Teachers in Upper Secondary and Colleges seldom impact us that much except for their good or bad lectures! I guess by then we were all more matured and are serious students! Among these crop of teachers, I remembered the Maths and Physics teacher Mr Shanmugam, a darn good teacher who grounded us solidly in Maths! Then there were Mr Prasad who took us in Biology and Mr. Meyappan in Chemistry! Mr. Kandiah in Elementary Maths. Another remarkable teacher was Mrs. Wong who taught me Chemisty in Form Six! A very pretty woman and good teacher who made Chemistry a very interesting subject! Thanks to her, I scored distinction in my HSC Exams! When I was in College, the most friendly, remarkable, encouraging Lecturer was Mr Samuel who taught us Electrical Engineering! He was a guitarist and used to play in night clubs and at our College concerts! Another holy terror of a lecturer was a Mr. P'ng who handled Physics! He put the fear in the hearts of the students! Many students failed in his subject and not sure because of fear or his lousy lectures! Haha! Guess that's about all I can remember and those during my varsity years were all great teachers and nothing much to share except their brilliance in their own respective field. For those of you who read this post and know the names of these teachers, then we must be from the same School or hometown or College and Uni! In closing I would like to say a heart-felt thanks to all of YOU teachers, lecturers who had impacted so much in my life! |
