Ancestor Worship
By John Cheong
Coming 4th April 2009 will be the Qingming Festival practiced almost by every Chinese family world wide. This tradition dated way back to the Tang Dynasty some time in 732 BC. I am a second generation overseas Chinese residing in Malaysia. My parents emigrated from Guangzhou, China in the 1930's. Especially for overseas Chinese, keeping their ancestral traditions in a foreign land reminds them of their roots in China. Till this day the Chinese in Malaysia, Singapore still continue celebrating this Qingming Festival as a way of expressing honour, respect and filial piety to their ancestors. Apart from this normative tradition, I heard of another version as to why Chinese practice ancestral worship! From Taoist influence (Teachings of Lao Tze - Dao)the Taoist believe that when one dies, his soul goes to heaven and meet with Shang Di (God) and he would be asked of his earthly experience, be they good or bad. So in order to appease the departed souls not to tell Shang Di that they were badly treated by his children while on earth, they introduced ancestral worship to appeased the departed souls so that he would not tell Shang Di the truth!

Contributor's Note
As a Christian coming from a traditional Taoist background, I am very interested in the ancient history of the Chinese Culture its relationship with Biblical Truths.
